On the Moors: Inspirations from Emily Brontë's Victorian Classic

“Wuthering Heights” by Robert McGinnis/Tom Simpson.

While crafting my Signature Scent blends, I was in the midst of re-reading one of my favorite novels, the Victorian classic Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Immersed in this classic story, and enveloped in Brontë’s rich tapestry of story-telling, I knew I wanted to create a scent inspired by the backdrop she casts of the English countryside. And there began the journey of creating our ever-popular English Fog scent blend.

Each time I read Wuthering Heights, I am newly intrigued by Emily Brontë’s imagery of the moors and how the complex beauty of the landscape mirrors the complicated, yet everlasting, love between Catherine and Heathcliff.

“He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”

―Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

Beginning with a base of bergamot and deepened with notes of clove and ylang ylang, English Fog conjures a picture of Catherine sitting in the parlor of the vast country estate of Wuthering Heights. As she sips from her cup of Earl Grey tea and gazes longingly outside, she remembers her days spent with Heathcliff on the moors, where they would explore the countryside enjoying each other’s company to brighten their days.

Like the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff, English Fog is a complex yet beautiful blend that transports you to the foggy moors of the English countryside.

Enjoy it in our perfume, candles, soap, bath salts, and diffuser blends. Explore the full collection, and get lost in a world of beauty and mystery.
